More '72s from the 'burbs

Schiller Park F.D.'s '72

Melrose Park F.D.'s '72

It sure is good to see these cars with their rockers intact, skirts in place, and riding on correct 8.90/N78x15 tires!

This girl gets a post of her own because, without a doubt, she's the prettiest ambulance I've ever seen. A Pennsylvania PCS member (and ambulance dealer) brought her to the 1989 meet in Gaithersburg. A Texas member in attendance bought the car and hired me to deliver it to Port Arthur when the meet was over.

I have to agree. That has to be the classiest ambulance I've ever seen. That thing is just beautiful. Does anyone know if its still around in the PCS?

That is beautiful. What a color scheme.

I agree. It was even nicer looking in person. What did happen to it, does "the other-other-Steve" still have it?

The ambulance service in Crawford Co. (Girard, KS) was operated by sheriff's deputies between when the funeral homes bailed and an EMS system could be organized.

The three beauties shown here were on loan from Bob Dietz until he could deliver a new fleet that had been ordered. Several deputies were at the courthouse that day taking an EMT class:

1970 Rescuer
1970 Lifeliner
1971 Volunteer

The Lifeliner was unusual because of the side warning lights, it's Unity Si-Tron siren, and a medical cabinet full of drawers instead of doors! It was a good-looking and well-lit car with its Solar Ray front tunnels and properly-trimmed #184-H Power Lights.

Dehnel's - West Allis, WI

Dick Dehnel used to own and operate Dehnel's Livery, Superior-Central A.S., a towing company, and U-Haul rental services from his facility in suburban Milwaukee. He generally used M-M coaches and had a brand new '77 3-way in the garage when I visited in December, 1976. He always liked S&S ambulances and bought them used whenever he could find a good one:

1968 S&S 55"
1969 S&S 48" (ex-Superior A.S., Wyandotte, MI)
1967 S&S 55" (note storage compartment in rear fender)
1970 S&S 55"
1970 S&S 43" (ex-Superior A.S., Flint, MI)
1971 M-M 3-way

you look at these pictures of cars in service and you really do understand how pampered our pets are. wheel covers missing skirts off. the winter accumulation of stuff on it. snow tires in the rear run year round and all. the in service pictures you have collected really so the hard use the ambulance did take.

Among other things, I've collected funeral home and ambulance service postcards for years. Here are two Cadillacs from those cards, cropped from larger views of the funeral homes:

McClave F.H. (Steubenville, OH)
1960 Sentinel

Alhiser-Wilson Mortuary (Escondido, CA)
1956 Meteor
