Looks like a '47 S&S ambulance wrecked in the photo. For now, I'll hold the Studebaker driver responsible for failure to yield to the ambulance.

you got to love these old pictures. the newest car I see is the 55 Chevy just behind the ambulance. you don't see the police car which would be a close guess to the time. as they used them up fast. you see the light set up on the ambulance. the high skirt most likely 17 in the rear. with just the tunnel lights in front. we think we know how these cars were till we see some real pictures of them in service. Steve put everything back on that ambulett he would be giggled about when he showed up.

Ca yellow plate
The Studebaker (looks like) it had a Black on Yellow (CA) License Plate that had the 56 in the indent area so the accident happend in 1956 or later.... maybe that would have the S&S Ambulance around 10 years old.... could be?
