Nice photo Chicago IL Fire Dept Ambulance 16 1971 Cadillac Superior

the amusing thing to me in all this in-service pictures is how many have the skirts removed. in 71 of course the need to put chains on the car to get around the winter driving in northern Il, they would come off once and never go back on. others services had there own reasons. this Mm from the O'Haira airport would be a nice one to find. decent set up and a not offend seen light arrangement.

The Lighting on CFD and CPD emergency vehicles in O'Hare and Midway airports had to be made different so they complied with the FAA rules on lighting for runways and aviation areas. Lighting color and oscillating flashing and rotation was all governed

Chicago maintenance garages would not replace the skirt when they were lost or destroyed. The mechanics thought they were a pain so many of the mechanic tossed the skirts in the scrap pile. I was told that some fire houses removed the skirts in the winter and also when they went in for service. This helped so the they would not get removed or lost. Some fire houses only put them on for parades or public showings. Many fire houses cared less because the rode them hard and put them away wet. That ambulance was replaced in 1973 with a Life Liner, it was placed in the back up fleet until 83 or used for parts and scrapped

The Airport was a very busy because it was all public property. In those days Chicago Ambulances only handled calls on public property or responded to injured firefighters or police. All private property calls were handled by private ambulances.
