Hearse show next Sat 5/4 in Asheville, NC!

This event was spearheaded by Dead Ends out of Atlanta area. They wanted to start an annual event early in the season within a 4 hour +/- drive to get everyone's juices flowing after cabin fever. Carolina Coffin Cruisers and Cemetery Knights (WV) also organized. There were attendees from KY, WV, VA, NC, SC, and GA.

Not all rides are stock. Not as gore-tastic as some PCS members preconceived notions may have been either. And yes, a couple FDs attended. Host hotel was perfect. So much so in fact that, rather than move city around as originally planned, Asheville may become the spot for subsequent meets. Show location will be different. Weekend may change and an additional day may be added.

Even given deplorable weather conditions 24 coaches made the trek. 23 of those were driven. Very respectable for an initial meet. Everyone seemed to agree that between last minute weather related cancellations and better advertising next year, twice that amount is quite feasible.

Friday night I managed to ride shotgun for dinner in Darrell Lindsay's heavily chopped '79 Superior. Hearing comments cruising downtown was priceless.

PCS site members Josh Horton and Thomas Green provide an idea of what rear seating after 9.5" has been removed looks like.

Although there were trophies, actual classes were not determined until seeing what showed up. Those ended up being: pre-'70, '70-'79, '80-'89, '90s-up, and People's Choice. Smaller awards were handed out included Hard Luck (Josh Horton) and Furthest Traveled (304 miles from WV).

Knowing coaches fairly well, I was asked to judge and doing so was an honor. Different criteria had to be utilized than a PCS meet given variety of coaches. Took a couple rain soaked hours for 3 judges to scrutinize details. Condition and consistency were major factors. For two classes that had very close competition, we factored rarity and turned to flaws for more separation.

And now captures from Saturday's show. Darrell's '79 took People's Choice.

Ryan Rick's Eureka came close to taking '80s trophy.

Mark Dawson's stunning 34k original mile '93 S&S won the tightest competition, '90s. This guy saw a random mention online and drove from SC not knowing anyone. That's awesome. And I think he's glad he went now!

Dave Rose's '72 S&S won '70s. A month must've been spent block sanding in a well lit bay before black cherry paint was perfectly sprayed. Top is still original too.

This coach previously belonged to Cary Livingston.

Perhaps Josh can fill in what monstrous effort went into having Abbie's accident damage done in time. His '73 rolled out of the paint booth 8:30am Friday!

Rick Cox's '93 S&S was the other toss up winner in '90s category. Incredibly rare having an all black interior including leather up front.

Thomas Green's '70 Lifeliner was the only rig in attendance. Felt retarded with how captivating those oscillating lights are, just like a proverbial deer.

We sort of screwed up awarding Christine Walker '80s trophy. Her coach was great, loaded with nice details, don't get me wrong. Hours later we realized it was a '92. Whoopsie. See what happens when the same body style isn't changed for eons...

H-D provided this enclosed porch for swap meet area. Much appreciated hanging out where it was dry. Fireplace helped too. Film crew to the left can be seen. They've been documenting the Carolina Coffin Cruisers since last July for a film.

No light plastic trophies here. Pinstriper on site subsequently personalized them. Cool hardware huh? Pistons were appropriately from a 472.

This was how Abbie was looking hours before getting to Asheville. Friday morning about 8:30/9:00.
Drove all the way without working signal lights or headlights. She had one headlight.

Put on power steering pump and had power steering for about 15 mins. No power steering all the way to Asheville. As soon as She got to the parking lot of hotel, She had power steering. Worked all weekend, got ready to leave parking lot NO power steering all the way back.

On the way to Asheville on I-485, I look down and gauges are off, no power. Turn on headlight switch and She dies. Look under hood and body shop had not reconnected wire to alternator so battery was not charging. Thomas was following Ambulance, so we cranked his ambulance and switched batteries. Thomas reconnected wire to alternator with a rock. Tools were under floor and only way get is from driver side, no way to open door beside road.
Had no problems in Asheville all weekend. Got home without any problems.
