Default Location of the former Capital City Ambulance Service, Des Moines IA

Ive been driving for lyft part time on weekends for several weeks now, what a fun part-time job!

Traversing every nook and cranny of the Des Moines metro, I often times wonder what it might have been like working the same streets decades ago as employees of the former Capital City ambulance service. If memory serves, they were a loyal M-M customer, particularly Criterions, and I believe they became the owner of the first-ever — prototype — Criterion, the only one built on the 1973 Cadillac commercial chassis.

As such, I consider Capital City Ambulance an important and historical company to our hobby, even though they’re no longer in business. Not unlike Vernon O’Neal’s former funeral home in Dallas.

I’d love to take some photos of what remains of the former Ambulance Service headquarters, perhaps staged in the exact same location of the well-known photo showing off their entire fleet of Omaha Orange over Cotillion White (orange-cream dreamsicle) M-M Cadillacs — and 2 Dodge vans — all parked at their main headquarters.

Only problem is, I have no clue where it was located! Google searches have turned up dry.

Can anyone give me the street address of their old headquarters? If so I’ll muster up some photos that I will post here for all to view.

And while I’m at it, if anyone has any requests for former or current funeral homes in the Des Moines metro they’d like me to photograph and post, feel free to PM me and I’d be happy to oblige. If you care to request a specific angle, or “then vs. now” perspective, feel free to share an old pic so I can attempt to duplicate the same perspective.

Abe

Go to the Public Library and check to see if they have any old City Directories or telephone books. Check in the Yellow Pages or adds.

As Chuck mentioned, city directories are the quickest and easiest way to find any former business, especially if you know when they went out of business.

I didn't realize that Capital City Ambulance was only in private ownership for 16 years.

I called the town library where Cotner Bevington was located, and they were able to look up the street address for me in less than 60 seconds. A lot faster than driving to the town library. Just ask for the Information Desk, to be directed to the correct person.

My hope is that the main ambulance garage is still standing. And if so, I will try to carefully search for traces of the former occupants such as maybe a painted over sign or logo still showing the company’s faded livery. Or if it’s currently a business like a body shop or something, I will call them up and ask if they know anything about the previous owners’ history. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the fantastic suggestions everyone, I’ll keep you posted on my sleuthing!

I'm sorry to report the final headquarters for Capital City Ambulance in Des Moines has been razed, it looks like recently as there is still heavy equipment in the driveway, and the ground has been bulldozed including the yard, shrubs, sidewalk, old radio transmitter pole, everything. It looks like the whole area is about to go through a major urban renewal as the building next door has been vacated and has a dumpster in the yard which was well tended in the google earth photos.

What a disappointment!!!

It was dark when I drove by otherwise I would have still snapped a few pics anyway but if I would have only gone there several months ago!!!

If it's like most cities there will be good pics of the building in either the city photographer's office or the assessor's office.
Rochester has been shooting every property from 5 angles since the 70s, and all images are retained. It makes taxing and Permitting so much easier.

You might also try the city's GIS for access to the pictures from the latest photoshoot.
