Anybody want some snow?

Tony Karsnia - Deceased - 1971-2020

September 12, 1971 - November 2, 2020
We've been very blessed over the past 20 years or so with mild winters here in Minnesota. This year, however, is much like I remember as a kid; SNOW and lots of it. COLD and lots of it, too.

34+ inches of snow for the season so far, and much of that came just last weekend. Took these photos the other day following an interment at Elmhurst Cemetery in St. Paul to give you an idea just how much snow is on the ground here. A little less in some places, a little more in others, large piles nearly everywhere, but a pretty accurate view nonetheless.

As for our Eagle Lincoln, which is rear-wheel-drive, it has done super in the snow, with the exception of last Saturday, when nothing that low to the ground - regardless of how many-wheel-drive - was barely able to move! This car handles much better in the snow than did our '98 Eagle Cadillac front-wheel-drive.

Stupid question time from one who grew up in snow country: How the heck do you folks deal with burials in today's world?

I can remember as a boy my Uncle had to delay burials back in Indiana at our local cemetary...He was also their super...due to flooding but I guess get the old tape measure out and start shoveling?

Gee WHiz Tony! It was in the 50's here today and clear so I got the kids out for some exercise. Started with the 79 AHA lincoln hearse, ran her about 15 miles and then got the 70 caddy MM COmbo out and rode about 60 miles enjoying a Bad Company 8-track as I went, then got my 66 F-100 truck out for a lap with the audiovox amfm cassette jaming which by the way has been in the truck since my dad installed in 1979. He sold the truck in 1988 after restoring it to a guy about 10 miles from me and after my dad died in 2000 I started wanting that truck back so told the guy if he ever sold it to call me and he said he would. He didn't drive it much and in Sept of 2005 he called and said come get it. My mom and I were thrilled to have chance to get it back and I ask him what shape it was in and he said it had been parked in his basement since year after he got it with only driving on those sunday church trips. She was just as I remembered with only change was aftermarket wheels and the tires he put on in fall of 1989 are still on there and doing great but I realize I am not goiing to far to chance blow out as they are 20 years old but still look great. Anyway, had a day of living in the past for sure! Sorry you northern guys and gals are snowed in.

Very light snow here right now as I type this. I am at work and it is the first snow of the year. Makes for an interesting shift.

All the snow here is gone thank god. It was in the low 40s and sunny here today, I heard its going to hit the low 50s this week. If it would jump up to about 70 or 80, I would be happy. I hate the snow, and I hate the cold.

Now, everyone sit back and close your eyes, and picture Danny riding down the road in old blue with his sun glasses on, listening to this song.:hide::071:

Thanks but no thanks on the snow and cold offer Tony! We've had plenty already with a bout three days of that mess down here last week! Cool picks of that Eagle though!!!

We have had alot of snow already for it to not even be officially winter here so far this year. It finally stopped snowing last Wednesday, not after we got up to three feet in some places. Now its just cold. Sadly, the Limo is in the garage until April, which gives me time to get some things done while she is in down-time, so enjoy those rides all of you that can still drive your cars year round! Ya gotta love the 8-track--purchased a factory correct GM one off of Ebay for my car just a few weeks ago. Nice pic of your combo in the Tri-State calendar Tony......

don't kid your self there Doug. the coldest I have ever been was one Jan. in Fl and GA. the worse winters I have spend was one in Tex and one in L.a. calf.
none of the houses I have see there were built for any weather and you could not escape the cold.

but the good news is Tony we got 2 inches last night and a sprinkle of rain this morning. so it's coming your way be they around thursday.

Current Minneapolis Weather

Here is a screen shot of the Weatherbug camera that is up on our roof as of 1520 hours today central time. Looks like 1/2 mile visibility. Those of you to the east of us should be looking forward to this tomorrow.

5-7 more inches today

Here are a couple photos from my "coach-cam" as we made our way to a local cemetery after a service today. Those of you who attended the '96 PCS Int'l Meet here in the Twin Cities will remember the funeral motorcycle escorts. Those guys are worth their weight in gold and then some...

sorry to tell you guys it cleared up just after I got the drive shoveled and the sun came out. high in the 40s here most of our snow now is gone. so yours might not last till Christmas either.

I don't know what they pay those guys for the Escort Tony but add a gift certificate to Starbucks for a tip for them.

Wow...locally, I've never seen a motor cop out in the snow before. That's a neat little outrigger they use there. Still mild here after our early blast of winter. We're in store for another "green" Christmas with the weather being around 7 - 10 C.

The state of Minnesota past a law about 15 years ago that requires all cemeteries to make burials available to any family who asks, any time of the year. The family may be required to pay any additional expenses for snow removal and frozen ground. However, in today's world there are ground heaters for graves that thaw the ground in about a day, and modern equipment can dig is harsh conditions and into several feet of frozen ground. One cemetery we deal with has two brothers who dig by hand year 'round. (I stay on their good side because they have arms bigger than my waist) As a mortician, I can tell you we dread holding bodies until the "spring burial season" and it is very, very rare these days. The hard part is the grave side service where is can be cold when your dressed for a funeral. I am trying to convince local clergy to adopt the "drive by blessing"; however, none have agreed!

Tony, do the police use the outriggers on their motorcycles just during winter for more stability on snow and ice or year round? I've never seen those. Good snow cam!

The escort service in Tulsa had several three-wheelers (with studded tires) for use in inclement weather.

The PD in Oklahoma City does the funeral escorts, but they use cars instead of their motorcycles in bad weather.
