Default Update Your GPS

I had a phone call tonight from a PCS member who had questions about Milwaukee, and his call reminded me of something I'd wanted to bring to everyone's attention.

Last summer, Wisconsin completed a multiyear reconstruction project of a major interstate interchange that is close enough to the exit for the meet hotel that the ramps for that exit were reconfigured. As a result, some GPS systems do not reflect the current road layout in that area. I know that my own personal GPS is now incorrect, and it is affecting enough people that the local news has reported on it.

So if you intend to rely on your GPS to make your way to Milwaukee, it is recommended that you update it this summer.

Same thing happened when Terri and I attended the Hudson, OH meet. GPS said one thing but roads did something else.

Smart idea.

Luckily for us at Hudson Sarah made a video and posted it explaining the changes and new routes, that is the only reason I found Hudson and did not end up in Buffalo.

My GPS (we call her Betty the Bitch) is never wrong...even if she doens't know where she is! She just keeps telling me to I have made a wrong turn...kinda like my wife.

Default Bump, Bump

It will be August in just a couple hours as I type this, so I wanted to bump up this post as a friendly reminder, and also to offer a few tips for travelling to Milwaukee in a couple weeks.

I imagine most of you will be coming to Milwaukee by driving on I-94. For my friends coming from the east and south, it is highly advisable that you take the I-294 bypass around Chicago rather than staying on 94 through Chicago. I-94 through the city is almost always backed up. The 294 bypass can back up near O'Hare airport during the rush hours, but usually moves fairly well.

For my friends coming from the north and west, Wisconsin started repaving I-94 through downtown Milwaukee just this summer, and traffic can come to a standstill because of it. A suggested alternate would be to take the I-894 bypass around Milwaukee. I-894 would reconnect with 94 on Milwaukee's south side just in time to exit for the host hotel.

For everyone, the exit you want to use to reach the host hotel is College Avenue. If your GPS tells you to get off at Rawson Avenue, ignore it and go to College anyway. All of the ramps for Rawson Avenue are currently closed for reconstruction.

Wisconsin also decided to start reconstructing I-94 through the city of Kenosha (about 40 miles south of Milwaukee) this year. Northbound traffic usually moves without a problem. Southbound traffic tends to back up and stop in the late afternoons and evenings. A possible alternative would be to take any major road west to US Route 45. US 45 is a traditional two lane road that parallels I-94 a couple miles to the west between Milwaukee and the Illinois state line.

Many of the local exits in Kenosha are closed. If you need to stop for food, gas, washroom, or whatever, it is advisable that you either stop in Racine, Wisconsin (about 10 miles north of Kenosha), or stop in Illinois. Illinois has a motorist oasis in the town of Lake Forest, which is about 20 miles south of Wisconsin.

Finally, if you don't update your GPS, and when you get close to the host hotel you find that your GPS and the road signs do not agree, follow the road signs.

Otherwise, I wish you all a safe and pleasant trip, and I sincerely look forward to meeting each and everyone of you!
