1950's Windsor Ambulance Service photos

I've finally had the opportunity to scan a bunch of old photos, mostly from the Windsor and Chatham area of Southwestern Ontario. Windsor is located directly across the river, south of Detroit, Michigan. These mainly date from the 50's and 60's. A few early 70's shots as well.

The car on the left is a 1962, so the picture was either in the 4th quarter of 1961 or sometime in 1962. Seeing the spacer in the rear bumper to bumper end, indicates that this is also a professional car.

How much newer do you want? I've got some shots from the 70's and early 80's, but they really aren't "pro" cars. Dodge vans mostly.

THe store is actually Wilkinson Shoe's and Luggage, and no they were not relatives. The picture was taken in the downtown business district, on Ouellette Ave, the main north south street in the city.

In response to Richards request for newer stuff....here we go. In 1969 the Ontario Hospital Commission began to regulate Ambulance Services. The demise of the pro car was near and the introduction of a more standardized, design began. I do not know when the pro cars were exactly phased out, but here are some shots of the 70's stuff.

Interesting to see the early 70's version of the Dodge reflecting on its pro car roots with the center rotator and corner flashers along with the frosted rear side windows. Where the later model van had a "modern" lightbar and tinted windows.

Dodge B series vans were built in Windsor, Ontario until 2003 and were a mainstay for Ambulances in Ontario EMS until then.

Thanks for the great pics of the '49, '51 & '52 Chevrolets. It is very difficult to find pics of these vehicles. Really helps in my resto of my '51. Did these come from original glossy photos when you scanned them?

I used to drive something similar to this Dodge for Alert Ambulance in Flint. A fellow driver used to call it "The Penthouse". It sure had more room to work in than the car based units.

Did you happen to catch that these two ambulance are NOT ONE and the same. There are distinct differences between the two. Roof lights and that single red forward facing light on the hood. Must have that California law in effect in Canada too.

Single light on the hood flashed, unlike the California requirement for a steady burn red to the front. From the early 70's thru 2001, the province bulk purchased ambulances and distributed them to the services under the funding agreement. The Ontario Ministry of Health, Emergency Health Services had the distinction of bankrupting every ambulance manufacturer they did business with ( except Demers & Crestline, not that they didn't try) and one manufacturer, Sentinnel, went into bankruptcy at least 3 times under different owners. Ontario has the most stringent standards and testing requirements for ambulances in North America, far in excess of KKK.

Adding to the uniqueness is that the "hood light" in the bottom photo is affixed with a bracket, while the one in the top photo is actually molded into the hood.

Ah, you know, those van and box ambulances all look alike........ :rolleyes:

(Well, actually, the van and box ambulances have some personality and differences from one another. True, not as much as pro-car ambulances do. But if you really look, they are different, too! :cool:)

No worries, glad you noticed it on your own, that means you are becomming the addict that the rest of us are.

I do like the molded in hood light better than the one thats just stuck on, makes it look like they put more thought into it.
