Just a quick note to ask if anyone has recieved their copy of the new MM book from Amazon yet ?
I know Iconografix has them now and some people have recieved their copy from them.
Today I have placed an order for 8 copies thru the PCS store site to help out the club. They still say pre-order on the Amazon site. Im hoping they get them soon and ship them out to everyone waiting.
I know there will be members wanting to get them signed at the MM reunion on May 21-22 in Piqua. The Amazon shipping date on my order today was
later than the reunion date.
Lucky for me I can have Tom sign mine anytime as he lives 10 minutes from me !
Looking forward to getting the MM book !!!
My first hearse ever was a '68 MM Citation and I loved it. I currently have 3 MMs and one Superior.
Hope to get a Eureka at some point and maybe an S/S too.
Post when you get a MM book from Amazon.
Thanks,
Darren

The last we heard from Amazon our best possible delivery date was May 19. That in my opinion is cutting it very close to reunion time. We ordered our book through the PCS/Amazon site/link. I guess this is the price we pay for getting the pre print price. When they were saying the delivery would be in mid to late April all looked good. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
I would like to get my book signed at the reunion but may have to wait until Albany.
Here is hoping someone will post here as soon as they get their book.

Many times Amazon will have a date that is not correct, and the books will be delivered before the posted delivery date. I found this with the Henny Book... It came about 10 days before they said it would arrive. Paul

Aren't these going to be available for sale in Piqua?
Mike Stevens
04-22-2010, 01:22 PM
I think the books will be for sale in Piqua. Some of us old _____ ordered ours at the pre publication price (a lower than published price). When you live on a pension you learn how to save here and there. Now the delivery dates have been moved by the seller. I don't know if this fits the title of planned chaos or not. Just one of those things we will deal with. When I ordered my book the seller said the delivery date would be mid April. Now we hear it may be closer to May just before the Piqua meet. Don't know if the seller talked to the printer or was just guessing on a date.
It comes down to buy a book at the pre published price and save a few bucks or buy it at the published price and don't depend on what sellers tell you.

30.00 less at Amazon and you also save 4.00-7.00 more on shipping.
almost 1/2 price at Amazon.
Plus the club gets a little commission if you use the link in the "sticky" notes.
(I bet the commision is very little, but I guess it helps with lots of orders.)

Just how much is the new M-M book?? I had asked Tony K to tell McP to bring 2 copies to Piqua for me, but now what I think I am reading is that $30 can be saved per book by buying from Amazon. Like another poster, I am retired on a small pension, and each $ adds up. Could one of you shed some light here, please? Many thanks. Jim

Did they get them from Amazon ? I would say no on that.
Likely Iconografix if they have them already.
Jim
Iconografix is the publisher and sell them throught their website or their store Enthusiastbooks for 79.95 plus 4-7.00 for shipping. 84.00 or 87.00 a book
Available now.
Amazon has them listed for 50.37 including shipping.
That is 34.00 or 37.00 less than the publisher.
Available in a couple weeks as they have to get them and send them out.
If you want to wait a few weeks you would save a lot if you are getting 2 copies.
I will as I ordered 8 copies for my friends.
I too was hoping to just get them at the signing but all inquiries didn't lead
anywhere. It would have been nice to have heard that they were going to be available so people could have know and looked forward to get their copy there but for whatever reason its up in the air.
Hopefully there will be books there. (Or at least there should be ! Its a book signing ! Really, how could there not be ?)
If there is a deal or not is another question.
I guess you will just need to wait and see.
Hope that helps,
Darren

Thank you, Darren. Your info helps a lot. Guess I am really out-of-touch with prices these days. $80 a book? Wow. I understand supply and demand, and "niche" markets, etc., but that still seems steep. I see no recourse other than the Amazon route. Are there any pitfalls lurking with the Amazon choice other than the wait?? Thanks agin. Jim

If anything, it will help the PCS by ordering through Amazon.
Look in the "sticky notes" and click on the link.
The PCS gets a little kick back if you order through that link.
Plus you will save about 68.00 on 2 books.
Personally I hope it all goes well because I ordered 8 books through the link to help the club out.
On another note... I used the money I saved on my copy of the book to become a PCS website Site Supporter ! So the site definitely got helped with my order.
Maybe Paul can let us know what percentage the club gets so people know and will use it more knowing how much it helps out. I can't see it being much but every little bit helps.
I will let you know how it goes,

Jim,
I have never had a problem with ordering from Amazon. The change in the delivery date for the M-M book is the only snag on this order. I ordered my book at the prepublication price. That saved even a few dollars more.
I used the link that is on the PCS website so the club got their commision.
I will order more through this link. I just won't expect to get them on any kind of deadline.

Thanks for using the PCS Website store on Amazon.com to order your books. The website gets a 4% commission on everything that is ordered through Amazon when you start at the PCS Storefront. This means that if you are buying tools, auto parts, or anything from Amazon, that once you access their site by going to the PCS Storefront first, we get a commission on your purchases. It is a small amount, but it adds up over time.. Thanks Paul

I have had mine now long enough to give it a thorough thumb-through. I believe it is the best work from Mr. McPherson to date, and that is saying a lot. This work is very well organized, very complete, and extremely well illustrated. The print and photo reproduction quality is also first rate. Sarah ordered in Feb and has an arrival date after mine.
Something is wrong with that picture.
Anyway, I will pick mine up April 15th in Michigan on my way to Billetproof
in Ann Arbour !
So I won't be able to take advantage of the super quick shipping anyway.
One more note... they shipped my 8 copies in two boxes with two tracking numbers ! Don't you think they could have found a box big enough for 8 books ! I can't be the first to order 8 books at once.
Not a big deal, just an observation.
Can't wait to get them !

Mine arrived 2day, April 30. Was ordered less than a week ago. First thing I did was look up Miller Packards, where I found the one-off 1937 12-cylinder carved job that appeared at the 1999 Packard Centennial in Warren. Packard did not offer a 12-cylinder commercial chassis, so Miller extended a Packard Twelve car chassis for this very impressive vehicle.

The only other McP book I have seen is the old "Black Book." This one seems quite well put together, with lots of very good photos. I haven't been able to "dig into it" yet, but what I have gotten to is very interesting. Now, if I could just find a really nice Miller Packard........................

Well....it's finally here and it's fabulous! It arrived yesterday and yeah, there are some pictures used in the old "Black Book" or derived from the literature but, there are hundreds and hundreds of new images that I've never seen anywhere before. And, from what I've read so far, a highly detailed text like nothing I've ever before produced on the subject of pro cars. In my opinion, this is just magnificent. As good as Superior, Eureka, Flxible and Henney were or are, this is even better. Kudos to all of those involved. Now, back to reading.

Glad to hear that you are happy with the book.
I suffer from the problem of being "year specific" as I have owned one coach (1960 MM) for 35 years.
It is the luxury of the author to pick and choose his content by preference, and with quotes from the MM Book regarding 1959 Cadillacs like "any similarities these baroque new offerings shared with former Cadillacs would be like comparing Marilyn Monroe to Boris Karloff" and "Although Miller-Meteor stylists must have winced when they received their first working drawings of the 1959 Cadillacs ...", it is a safe bet that these years would get minimal coverage (The 1959 is completely omitted from the color section).
While I understand the author's personal opinion, I think that Miller-Meteor was the most successful of all coach builders when it came to styling for the 1959/1960 era Cadillacs.
No author can please everyone, and this was just my turn for the short stick! lol

Yeah, now that you mention it, there are no '59's in the color section! Good point. I'd have to agree with you. M-M's styling for the '59 models was very dignified - especially when compared to some of the Superiors of that vintage. But, you'll have to admit that '59 Caddy was a radically designed car compared to anything the company had offered before or after. I guess that's what makes them icons. While I love'em all, I really like the cars of the 30s and 40s. I guess you're drawn to the cars of you remember from your younger days.

You don't know how right you are. I too love them all, really like the 50's-60's cars, but have a thing for the 80's coaches-thats from my childhood when I began to notice them.
When I have my 49 S&S and one of my 80's coaches sitting next to each other at a car show the young people look at the 80s one and dont even see the 49, the older people its just the oppisite.

A wise man I know once told me that you can pretty well gauge the age of a person by the year of old cars he shows the most interest in, drives or collects. I guess he was not that far off the mark.

05-06-2010, 11:56 AM
Yeah, now that you mention it, there are no '59's in the color section!...Since M-M didn't take many color photos, most of the photos in the color section are from the "modern" era - restored cars that we've seen at shows and such. Unfortunately, thanks to "Ghostbusters", many of the '59 M-M's that have survived this long have been converted into Ecto-replicas....

Yeah, we all waited a long time to see this book. However, as I read through it and and learn more than I ever dreamed of knowing and see all of the new pictures, I stand by my original statement - this is fabulous. Without a doubt the procar book of the decade. Thanks again to all who assisted McPherson in producing such an outstanding book. He is the undisputed master of the subject of professional car history. If he hadn't done this, which of us could?

So far I have had time only to leaf through the book. The most interesting photo I've found is not of a car, but of the Miller plant in Bellefontaine. This is an aerial view, looking South. I like it because it shows some of the now-vanished railroad presence. Both New York Central main lines are visible, the St. loius - Cleveland line in the lower right of the shot, and the Cincinnati - Detroit route in the upper left. If the photog had snapped the shutter while the plane was a little further North, he would have gotten the junction where the two main lines came together, and maybe the depot, too. The last time I was in Bellefontaine, about all that was left is the Cleveland line curving through, past the still-standing shell of the juction interlocking tower, whose symbol was HI. There were 3 big freight yards and a large engine facility with roundhouse. Great r.r. town, back in "The Day." I have a tape of movies shot there in '55, with steam engines evrywhere, and new coaches parked along the North side of the Miller building.

My M-M books arrived last week, Thursday 4/29 I think. I wasn't expecting them yet and only happened to see the box when I went out the front door right after dark to ask my next door neighbors something. I've only had a thumb through so far but it looks great. In the same order but arriving earlier were the Henney and Fleetwood 75 books. Because of many other things to do lately I decided to look through the Fleetwood 75 book first since it's smaller. I've been at my barn all week doing some Army duty in Columbia. A friend came this morning to check it out and his two younger kids said the '83 Fleetwood limo was their favorite-they seemed to enjoy the "rear salon" a lot! :applause: Hmm, I agree, a lot of these smileys are pretty violent!

:my2cents:
What a disappointment. I expected lots of photographs, but the book is mostly text. The photos that are used are way too small for the most part...very, very disappointing, especially for such an expensive book. Plus, too many of the pictures in this book are just artist's renderings from ads and brochures instead of actual photos. Again, very disappointing! The same goes for the captions; they contain lots of manufacturer's advertising rhetoric instead of actual descriptions from the author. Per par for all of McPherson's books, many of the warning devices (especially sirens) are misidentified.
Like "The Henney Motor Company - A Complete History," this book is better borrowed then bought.
