Detroit Police used station wagons from the early 1960's till the mid 1970's as patrol units and we needed as ambulances and they were Dodges and Plymouths. It was not till they got Ford wagons with a fold down seat that they could ride in the back with the patient.

For those living in the Metro Detroit area the May issue of Michigan Motor Enthusiasts will have a story on "Police Station Wagon Ambulances."

I do have an original of this brochure.

NOT a lot of room between the driver and patient!:wowguy:You're not kidding. Note that the patient in the photo seems particularly short (may even be a kid or teenager), and the "police officer" is sitting straight upright, not reclining a bit. On my Ambulet (and Jeff Beyer's), the cot actually extends over the drivers' seat by about 6" if the cot is flat, and it touches the tailgate window. It's a very small ambulance.

I have to say, if I were an ambulance service owner in 1954 (or '55 as shown in the brochure), I would not find a Studebaker Ambulet practical and would not have bought one unless I was really short on cash. But as a collector car nowadays, it's a very cool car!
