Our beloved Danny Ryder just purchased this beautiful 74 Criterion from somewhere in Texas. He is in the process of getting it transported to his location then I'm heading up to take a peak at it.
Nice Criterion Danny and another Pro-Car saved by a PCS member. :thumb:

Take the angled siren mounts and send to John to have more made, please!!!

Before anyone worries about the back glass being out I have a back door I stashed back about 10 years ago thinking I would need it someday. Not sure if passenger door glass in it or not but heard Cary might have one? Alittle dusty but has been covered so shouldn't have too much interior damage. From KS before this guy found it so curious who had it, should know soon.:applause: Want to thank Adam Borkott, Paul Steinburg, RIchard Vyse, for helping me with this decision.

Danny... I know we've only been friends for 14 years, but could you at least try to get my name right?!?! :D

And stay out of the booze at 9am, or at least invite me over first! :burp:

I'm so glad to see you got it though. I think once you get it home and cleaned up, it may be part of your long term collection, which is a rarity in itself. And Richard, if you do come up, let me know and I'll come meet up with you guys. Danny's garage is only about 30 mins from me.

OK Richard now you know what your looking for. either the one I pictured or one like this, but I think the tube going up front and the plastic housing are gone off this one. the difference is early or late 74 on the mount.
looks like a good find. on this one all the stuff is there. the damage on the quarter is repairable. also some vary expensive lights on the car. most people would shy away from a car that looked like this but all you really see is just dirt. you would be surprised just how the car would look with a good bath.

I received a PM from Danny today, giving me some details on this car and his '67 Miller-Meteor.

Just a reminder to all that we are attempting to document as many Miller-Meteors as possible.

If you have a Miller-Meteor or locate one anywhere (even in a junkyard), please forward me a photo and the M-M body number from the dataplate (usually found under the hood on top of the left front wheelhouse.) As the list continues to grow, we may be able to better pinpoint how many cars Miller-Meteor built in any given year and how many of a specific type (Criterion ambulance, for example) were made.

THANKS to Tony for taking time to do this. When I "acquired" my 1974 Criterion years ago.... thru the M-M Body Number reported back to Tony I was able to find out who had it new and all the other details right down to the type and color of the linoleum floor.

Hey Richard.
If your going to come up this way, make a real trip of it and come join the South GA street Rods at the 32nd April Fools Rod Run in beautiful Waycross GA. Dates are 9 and 10 April. We have cars from Daytona every year. Go to http://www.aprilfoolsrodrun.comwww.aprilfoolsrodrun.com
This will give Danny some extra time to get it ready. You could also call it a NY shake drown run.
Lets really expose these people to more pro cars other than my hearse!

Happy to know that some people follow my advise ...

I knew that trick from years ago Paul but tried something new I was told that was not worth a hill of beans but thanks for reminding me Paul. Will bypass tank and see if she will run, no telling what might be in the tank after years of sitting but after pecking on it sounds empty.:wowguy:

Paul Steinberg
02-26-2010, 01:49 PM
If the tank is empty, just put a few gallons of high test gasoline into it, and then start the car... Usually, the tanks are clean and the car should run. I have rarely found that the tanks were gummed up like when gasoline was left in them back in the 1930's. My 1963 Chrysler started and ran on 20 year old gasoline once I got the engine started by putting gas into the carburator.

Had that thought and have had good luck with that before. The cap was still on and no old gas fumes coming from tank. Maybe they ran out of gas and left it?:657:

If you decide to part it out, and not fix it, I will buy the siren mounts on the roof, and the air cleaner pre assembly. I need these for the car that I will be buying from a Florida PCS Member, when he gets divorced and moves to Michigan with out any cars.. :D

Years ago I had a friend who bought a "Barn Find"... would'nt start so until doing some Plugs,Points etc. He listened to another who suggested he dump some Av Gas in the tank and then prime the Carb with a few good shots...Yeah fired it right up...until the banging started...Helps to have Oil in it.

John ED Renstrom
02-26-2010, 10:29 PM
man try to start one with out checking the fluid levels gets what they get. I have heard all kinds of stories on how to. but dump some fresh gas in prime and fire has always worked for me. just check to see there is oil and water. then look for leaks and be prepared for a stuck float. run it for a bit then check the filter at the carb. change if necessary. if it runs put a can of Sea foam in and ten gal of gas and drive it out. with a old engine the block is impregnated with oil and it will either have a gotten water down one cylinder or not. seldom happens to one with a Air Cleaner on and the hood closed. if it was running when parked it should at least fire latter. you get into more trouble swapping stuff around., leaving something off in your confusion.

I had a little fluid problem when I bought my Volunteer ambulance. When I went up to look at it and test drive it, it had about 3/8 of a tank of gas. Not enough to drive it home, but more than enough to get to a gas station. So when I went to pick up the car, a friend dropped me off, and I was planning on just jumping in and driving off. I started it and it died. And the gas gauge was on "E". And the mileage was the same as when I last saw it. The seller, who was otherwise very nice, had siphoned the gas out and didn't even leave me ONE gallon to get to the gas station. The seller wasn't there, the ambulance was at a construction company shop next door. Fortunately, I got a guy from the company to take me and a gas can up the road so I could get enough gas to get it to the gas station. After that, it was fine.

When I got the criterion it had no brakes, did not run, and had two flat tires. After a few days poured gas in carb and she breathed a few breaths and then I put gas in the tank and today I tried her again and after several minutes of intense smoke she ran really good. Next the brake issue, master cylinder dry, fill and start pumping brake pedal and refilling and actually generate some brakes but saw leak about middle of car from brake line but just dripping alittle so next put in gear and nothing so ck tranny fluid and start adding and after six quarts it goes in gear too so after what I am guessing about ten years the 74 will start, go into gear, lot drive for now, and stop. Pretty good for one afternoon of work and some materials I would say. The lights and siren sound better when car is running to get most out of power instead of using jump box to play with the toys. :17875:

After only a short time and little effort the criterion will now start up and drive around the yard. Still needs some tlc to take off down the open road though. This is all good being I bought it not even expecting it to run at all being not started in years. Worst thing now is a leaky brake line and usual exhaust manifold leaks but that is not a big deal, I can always just sit and play with the lights and siren!

Couldn't stand it, was playing with the criterion today and next thing I know I was driving down the hwy, sorta. Actually, there is an industrial park behind our dealership and it runs down the hill about quarter mile so off I went through the industrial park and back out on the road and back around. Got up to about 40mph in the short distance but hard part was trying to stop being hardly any brakes at the moment. What fun we have with these old cars. No idea how many years since she has seen the open road. After I get the brake line fixed and drivers side exhaust manifold worked on she will be alittle more drivable.:14_6_12: Look out Richard, I am after you!

Danny,
There were three cars from Trego County (Wakeeny) that were purchased by MAST ambulance in Kansas City, MO (or more specifically their contractor EPI) back in the 90's with the idea that they could piece together one good parade car out of the lot. That idea fell apart when EPI was disbanded and legend has it that the former employees took the cars for their own. I have some pictures of them someplace that I think came from Steve Loftin. Let me see if I can track them down.

Ooooh! Eric, any help appreciated here. Trego was last county to title the car I have and last tag was 1990. Guy in TX I got from claimed he had car about three years but he never titled it in his name and I don't know where he got it and he does't respond to my emails now that I have car. Title signed off in late 90's.:)

Trego Co. Amb. Service (private service, contracted with the county; no longer in operation) bought all three of these cars used from Bob Dietz; I have no idea where they served new.

All three were purchased from EPI by the man you bought the '74 from. He still has the '72 Superior, and the '75 Superior is owned by a collector in MO.

Next step taken today: Took the criterion to exhaust guy to see just how much to patch that up. Think it needs drivers side exhaust manifold work and tail pipe work. Estimate reveiled to me in the morning. Next step will be leaking brake line. Will have to drive 20 miles to my mechanic for brake line work, that should be a hoot! I left the criterion at exhaust shop and told them brakes were very poor and nobody wanted to move to stall fearing not being able to stop but the guy who will do the work came in and said "Oh Boy" another ambulance to work on and speeded around the building with siren blareing. He is quite a nut but can't be beat when it comes to exhaust work.

Little screw up with my info. Went to get the car and price was for three cars we had worked on and bill for 74 was $50. Two manifold bolts were replaced and a piece of pipe in front of muffler. They didn't notice tail pipe was gone past axel so after I get brakes fixed will take back for that. Got back to dealership and tried to put in park and shifter didn't engage tranny when moved so knew linkage had an issue. Checked and sure enough the clip had broke that held the shifter rod to tranny rod. No big deal there. My exhaust is quite like it is suppossed to be now.

After getting the windows replaced and tail lights and a few other things sent the old girl off to get the brake lines patched up and the return fuel line had started leaking near tank. Weird thing was after shop starting working on brakes they called and ask where the missing rear brake drum was! I ask what the %*#$& he was talking about and they said they pulled the wheel and no drum. Oh Shi%, I had drove this car on several short trips for a total of about 50 miles and never knew it was missing. I had replaced the front tires after getting the old girl but back were pretty good so hadn't pulled them. What person would put a wheel on without a drum? ANyway, with the help of my good friend Dave Ware he brought and delivered to shop a drum and spacer so maybe tomorrow the criterion will be half way road worthy for alittle fun. I have also been working alittle on her so if everyone promisses not to laugh I will post pictures by weekend.
