Ok guys, you know it is coming. So I thought I would have just this one thread for my Criterion updates. Going after the truck Thrusday, Oct 1st then heading to Leo's place. Mike Barruzza will meet me there as well as Paul Vickery to assist in loading. :p

We will probably have 3 days of no posts by Richard. He is on the road headed North to pick up the car. :D

He won't be at Leo's place five minutes and he'll have that Criterion turned into a mobile computer center! :D

I just got a text from Richard. The transmission in the truck went out on the Jersey Turnpike. Transmission is in process of being removed. And he was only around 100 miles from his Criterion! Anyone notice this or is it just me, doesn't he have a lot of transmission issues!?!?! Wonder if any pieces/parts have flown off the truck? :eek:

Don't mean to hijack Richard's thread, but this reminds me of how excited I was with the purchase of my first Criterion and the road trip to get it home. I bought a 1974 Criterion from Garfield County Ambulance Service in Jordan, Montana via sealed bid ($800...man, those were the days!) in 1994. Joe Klein and I took a road trip out to Montana to get it and returned with no problems.

This picture of a much younger (and thinner) Tony was taken at a "rest area" in the middle of Big Sky country. If you look on a map between Circle and Jordan, MT, there is a picnic table indicating a rest area. It's actually a trailer house with a couple outhouses and picnic tables in the yard (or at least that's what it was back in '94.)

Get that tranny fixed and travel safe, Richard. We're looking forward to seeing you and your new prize safely home. :cool:

What cost $800 in 1974 would cost $3455.43 in 2008. I am willing to give you double your money back plus some. Where do you want me to send the check??? ;)

What a bunch of crap! Get within 100 miles of the Criterion and the tranny blows up in the truck. The minute I called Sam Gill and told him just how great his truck was doing then 2 hours later it happens. It will require a complete overhaul and I'm stuck here for 3 days. I did rent a car and will head to Leo's Sat morning to see it and take some pics. I left the lap top at home just so I wouldn't post anything. I can't get it until Monday evening then straight home again.

Find someone to tow it to Delaware so you will just have to return home with it, without driving all the way to New Jersey. Possibly Steve Lichtman can make the trip??? :confused:

Richard, unfortunately, I am tied up over the weekend working at the National Fallen Firefighter's Memorial Service here in MD. But I am clear all day Monday, and can help if you need! Could pick it up and get it back to New Castle on Monday so you can head south that evening instead of north. Call me Sunday AFTER 3:00pm, xxx-xxx-xxxx, don't reply here, I won't see it tomorrow or Sunday.

LeeAnn, can you text my number to Richard if he doesn't see this? I don't have his cell.

Kinda like Tony, I hate to hijack Richards thread, but this is another one of those close but still so far away stories that I have heard (and experienced) about professional cars.

Back in '94 (hey Tony, you and I both bought pro cars in '94) when I purchased my '73 Superior Cadillac Crown, a friend of mine and I drove about 175 miles into West Virginia to look at the car on Monday. We didn't get a chance to actually get it out and check it out because it was stored in a barn behind a boat and a couple of other collector cars. Well, love at first site, we drove back down Friday with cash in hand to pick her up. I would guess that we drove her about 165 miles toward home and as we were within about 10 miles of the house, I got a flat tire. 5pm in the evening, 10 miles from the house, flat tire and no spare! We just happened to be within about 100 feet of a tire shop that I knew well. I limped up the side of the road and into their parking lot. I asked the guy if he he had ANY tire that would fit and he found one out back in the used pile. Even though he was actually closed for the night, he put it on and didn't charge me a penny. We made it the last 10 mile home without a problem. I think that he helped me out because he was just glad to get "that old hearse" out of his parking lot.

Richard, I am sorry to take up your thread. Let us know how you are doing and when you get the car and get her home. Good luck in getting the truck going and getting you and the Criterion home safely!

since it sitting out side a house in Pen right now you may still get it for 800 bucks.

I don't believe Richards luck would have flown up and drove the car home. at least then he would be fixing his own transmission not Sam's. he is going to half to learn to keep them in drive not second. I wounder if this one will be as cheep a fix as the lifliner was.

Steve, I'll text your number to Richard sometime mid morning. Just now seeing this, it's almost 2:00 AM (my time). Last I heard from him he said his phone battery was dying. Hopefully he has a charger with him!

Richard, I sure hope everything works out for you. Being broken down is a real pain in the A, isn't it. But, in the end, you will be rewarded once you get home with your new Criterion.

I spoke with Richard Saturday morning (Paul sent me his phone number). He was headed up to Leo's, and it sounded like he had Mike Barruzza lined up to possibly help him get the car southbound at least as far as Mike's place in the Philly area. Haven't heard back since to know if he needs any help on Monday.

What we need is a little GPS tracking unit, and a map, so we can see a little dot to tell us where Richard's Criterion is right now!

Today is Monday and hopefully will be on the road this evening. Spent Saturday driving the Criterion to Mike's house. Man, what a garage he has. Spent Sunday with the Criterion and Mike just doing some cleaning even getting Mike into assisting me with it's first bath from it's new Daddy.
The plan is: Get the truck fixed today, drive to Mike's and load the Criterion, then head for home.
You're right Bill, it is a major pain in the butt being stranded. Worse part is my hands are tied.
Wish me luck and updates will happen when I get back to Florida. I've taken lots of pictures and a few videos (duh) and ready to release to the public. Also met Paul Vickery Saturday morning and got to see his cars. Some people have all the luck.

No cheap fix costing $3500 for the rebuild on the tranny. Best news, the owner insisted he pay for the repairs.
